How to Share GIFs on Facebook

Published

Facebook supports GIFs in more places than most people realize — timeline posts, comments, Stories, Messenger, and even group discussions all handle animated GIFs. The mechanics differ slightly between contexts, but once you know where the GIF button is in each location, the process is quick. Here is a complete breakdown.

Posting a GIF in Your Facebook Timeline

When creating a post on Facebook, look for the three dots ("...") or a GIF button in the post composer. In the desktop browser version, click "Photo/Video" to upload a GIF file directly from your computer — Facebook accepts GIF files and will display them as animated posts in the timeline. You can also click the three-dot menu for more options and choose GIF to open Facebook's built-in GIPHY search. Type a term, select a GIF, and post it. The GIF will autoplay in the feed as followers scroll past.

On the mobile app, the process is similar: tap the Photo/Video option in the "What's on your mind?" box and select your GIF from your camera roll. Or tap the three-dot icon in the post composer to find the GIF option for the GIPHY search interface.

Adding GIFs to Facebook Comments

Comments on Facebook have their own GIF button. Look for the GIF icon (labeled GIF) in the comment box below any post. Click it to open a GIPHY search and find your GIF. This is the most common way to add a reaction GIF in response to someone's post, and Facebook renders it inline in the comment thread — no link, just the animation playing directly under the post.

Sending GIFs in Facebook Messenger

Open a Messenger conversation and look for the GIF button or emoji icon in the message bar. Tap it to access the GIF search. Messenger also lets you directly attach a GIF file from your camera roll — tap the image icon (the mountain landscape) and select your file. Both methods result in the GIF animating inline in the conversation.

GIFs in Facebook Groups and Events

Group posts and event discussion boards support GIFs the same way as regular timeline posts. In a group, when creating a post you will see the same GIF option in the post composer. For comments within a group thread, the GIF icon appears in the comment box. Groups are often enthusiastic GIF environments, particularly for themed or community groups.

Facebook Stories with GIF Stickers

Facebook Stories, like Instagram Stories, support GIPHY stickers. Create a Story, tap the sticker icon, and select GIF from the sticker options. Search for what you want, place the sticker on your Story, and share. The GIF loops in the Story for the full 24-hour period.

File Size and Format

Facebook accepts GIF files up to 20 MB for posts and Messenger. For best results, keep files under 10 MB. If your GIF is over the limit, the GIF compression guide will help.
