What's the difference between a GIF and a sticker?

A GIF is a rectangular animation with a solid background — it always shows up as a square box in chat. A <a href="/sticker/">sticker</a> uses an animated WebP with a transparent background, so the subject appears to float on top of whatever you paste it onto.
