What is the difference between GIF and WebP?

WebP is a newer image format by Google that supports animation like GIF but with much smaller file sizes (up to 50% smaller). WebP also supports more colors and transparency. GIFDB serves WebP versions of GIFs to modern browsers for faster loading, while maintaining GIF compatibility.
