Free GIF Caption Maker
Add text to any animated GIF — drag the caption wherever you want it, pick the font, colour and outline, or drop a caption bar above the frame. The preview keeps playing while you edit. Upload a GIF
Drag & drop or click to select — max 50 MB
Editing happens in your browser. The GIF is only sent to us when you press Download, so the caption can be burned into every frame, and it is deleted straight after.
How to add a caption to a GIF
Drag it in or tap to pick. Max 50 MB. It stays on your device while you edit.
Top text, bottom text, or a caption bar above the GIF. The preview keeps animating as you type.
Drag either caption anywhere on the frame, then set the font, size, colour and outline.
The caption is burned into every frame and the GIF saves to your device — still animated, no watermark.
Two ways to caption a GIF
Text on the GIF is the meme convention: a line across the top, a line across the bottom, white letters with a black outline so they stay readable over whatever is moving underneath. It is the right choice when the joke and the picture are the same thing.
Text above the GIF — the caption bar — is the reaction convention. A solid band is added above the frame and nothing in the picture is covered, which matters when the GIF is a face or a small piece of action you do not want obscured. Switch on Caption bar and the GIF is padded to make room; the bar grows to fit however many lines you type, and both the bar colour and its text colour are yours to set.
Positioning
Top and bottom is a convention, not a rule. Both captions can be dragged anywhere on the frame with a mouse or a finger, which matters when the subject sits in the middle of the picture or when a line reads better beside something than above it. The two position sliders do the same job if you would rather be precise than drag. Long captions wrap on their own and shrink if a line outgrows the frame, so text never runs off the edge.
Colour and outline
White text with a black outline works over almost any footage, which is why it is the default and the first preset. Both colours are adjustable and so is the outline thickness — a thin outline disappears on busy footage, a heavy one looks clumsy on a plain background. Set the thickness to zero for clean text with no border at all.
What the preview shows
The preview is the real GIF, still playing, with your caption layer sitting on top of it. That layer is drawn by your browser in your own fonts, and it is that exact layer that gets composited onto every frame when you download — so the file you get is what you were looking at, not an approximation of it. Scroll down and the preview follows you into the bottom-right corner; tap it to jump back up.
GIF Caption FAQs
Is the GIF caption maker free?
Yes — every render is free. No signup, no payment, no daily limit, no watermark.
Does the GIF stay animated?
Yes. The caption is composited onto every frame and the GIF is re-encoded with its original timing and loop, so it animates exactly as it did before.
Can I move the text anywhere on the GIF?
Yes — drag either caption with the mouse or a finger, or use the two position sliders. Captions are clamped to the frame so text can never end up off the edge.
Can I change the font and colours?
Yes. Eight fonts, a size slider, text colour, outline colour and outline thickness, plus one-click presets for the classic white-on-black meme look, plain white, black on white and yellow.
What is the caption bar?
A solid band added above the GIF with your text inside it — the Tumblr and Twitter style caption. Switch it on, type, and the GIF is padded to make room. The bar and text colours are both adjustable, and the bar grows to fit multiple lines.
Why does the preview shrink into the corner when I scroll?
So you can still see the GIF while you are down in the controls. Tap the small preview to scroll back to the full-size editor.
Is my GIF uploaded to your servers?
Only when you press Download. Editing is entirely local — your browser draws the caption layer. The GIF and that layer are then sent to be composited, and both are deleted as soon as the finished GIF is returned.
Does it support emoji?
Yes. The caption is drawn by your own browser, so any emoji or character your device can render lands in the GIF.
What is the max file size?
50 MB per GIF upload.
Can I caption a video?
Convert the video to GIF first using MP4 to GIF, then caption it here.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. Captions can be dragged with a finger and the layout packs into one column. Any modern browser.
