How to Download YouTube Shorts
YouTube Shorts are YouTube's short-form vertical video format, and they contain a lot of content worth turning into GIFs. Downloading Shorts is slightly different from downloading regular YouTube videos because of how YouTube serves them, but the same tools generally work. Here is the process.
Getting the Shorts URL
On mobile, open the Short you want, tap the Share button, and copy the link. The URL will be in the format youtube.com/shorts/[video-id]. On desktop, copy the URL from your browser's address bar. Some downloading tools prefer you to convert the Shorts URL to the standard watch URL format (youtube.com/watch?v=[video-id]) — if a tool fails with the /shorts/ URL, try the watch URL version instead.
Downloading with yt-dlp
yt-dlp is the most reliable tool for YouTube Shorts downloads. Install it from yt-dlp.org (available for Windows, Mac, and Linux). Run yt-dlp [URL] from a terminal to download the video. By default it downloads the best available quality, but you can add -f 'bv[height<=720]+ba' to limit to 720p, which is sufficient for GIF conversion and downloads faster. The video saves as a webm or mp4 file to your current directory.
Browser-Based Alternatives
Online tools like y2mate, SaveFrom.net, and SnapSave all support YouTube Shorts downloads. Paste the URL, select the quality (720p is recommended), and download the MP4. These tools work without installation but occasionally have ads or rate limits. For one-off downloads they are convenient; for regular use, yt-dlp is more reliable.
Converting to a GIF
Once you have the MP4, open the GIFDB MP4 to GIF converter, upload the file, and trim to your target window.
